New coop

Hi, just wanted to show a few pictures.  We changed our small runs this fall.  Now I shouldn't have to go in a shovel snow for our spoiled flock.  Here is a picture of the old run.

The new run.

It will keep the snow off, the hot sun, heavy rain and we don’t have to bend over.  We still have a few touches to finish it off, like eves trough, etc but winter ready.  We have an electric fence around there area and they take turns going out while we still have too roosters.  Makes it really safe for them when we are not around.
And a few cute ones.

These little ladies met face to face for the first time.  Our hen is Princess Pea, she has a swollen ankle and we separated her from her very loving male, she also has sight issues, her depth perception is bad, she can get food from feeders or a bowl but she can’t hit a pea on the ground if she tried.  She is two and is a great layer.  Our cat is 14, Java, we weren’t  sure how this would go and we were ready for the worst as she is a good bird hunter, but things turned out great.  It was so cute to watch, only thing Princess minded was the tail in her food and Java rubbed around us.

Re: New coop

Your new run cover looks awesome Hollowridge....some spoiled chickens indeed!

Love Princess Pea (and Java!) and your story. I know exactly what you mean with her sight, I have had one EO with the same problem.  Funny how even after a couple years their aim never improves.

I am envious of your weather too! We are sitting at -20C right now with a layer of snow on everything. It was a magnificent fall but winter has arrived. :cozy:

Re: New coop

:thanks: Poplar girl.  Would you believe the run cover was out of peoples garbage :P.  They were solar panels for heating swimming pools, and when we tore apart the old runs we reused all the wood and some of the wire also.  I love recycling.

It is good to know that others had had sight issue with birds, she was names Princess Pea before we knew her problems were with her eye.  She has actually gotten worse this year but as long as she can get her water and hit the big food and grit, we will continue to spoil her.

:nervous: Wow about your weather, we are very lucky and I am not looking forward to the cold and winter snow. :(

Re: New coop

Wow looks great HR   Love the covering and what a great garbage find   I know I try to use re-purposed materials when ever I can.

Love the picture of PP and Java, it's funny my cat is a great bird hunter too but she never touches the chickens.

I too have a 2 year old EO hen with sight issues, she moves her head around kind of funny trying to focus on something but she has no trouble finding food or water.

DH and I are almost done with the new winter digs in the bottom of our barn.  Once done I will post some pictures.

Oh PG -20 already, that's rough!!

Thanks for sharing your pictures!!!
