Pale and sick hen

Hi all

I have a Welsummer hen that has been sick. She is pale and lethargic. Combs, wattles, skin around her eyes are pale. I checked for mites didn't see any signs, but sprayed her bottom with frontline spray. I DEed the whole coop. No one else is sick looking.

Next, I de-wormed her with safeguard for three days. 0.1 ml of 10% solution each day. Still no improvement.

Her crop feels soft/normal and I saw her eat. So I don't think its a crop issue.

Today my husband gave her a bowl of food with meal worms, sunflowers and millet and a cup of ACV water. She was not interested in either. Then, I wasn't there, but he said she threw up a little clear liquid.

Any ideas?

Re: Pale and sick hen

ok, back in isolation with Duramycin, it's what i have on hand, in her water. crazy chickens. I'll keep her on it for 7 days and see how she does.

Anyone recommend a good book on chicken health? I have one called "chicken health handbook" It drives me crazy trying to figure anything out in that book. :banginghead:

Re: Pale and sick hen

I noticed the yellow face too.  When I googled jaundice in chicken it means liver failure.  Can be from moldy feed or from getting fed too well and getting fat?  I hope she recovers for you, Welsummers have got to be the nicest colored hens!
Is your snow all gone?  We can finally see a few gravel spots on the laneway but we still have tonnes of snow with more coming tonight!

Re: Pale and sick hen

Yes jaundice does mean liver, even if you can give her something fortified with omega 3 (some feeds have it added) or hepato support.   The omega 3 is a good fatty acid that helps repair the liver.  Not wanting to eat is another sign of liver issues it makes them feel nauseous.  Too bad there is no gravol for chickens :(

Hope your girlie gets well

Re: Pale and sick hen

We had nice weather the last few days. IT was 70 F today.

Ok tomorrow the coop gets a full cleaning to clean up any old food and she gets some omega 3. Maybe too much BOSS???
None of the others seem to have issues.

Re: Pale and sick hen

I just got done reading a thread that sounded just like mine situation. When they did a necropsy, it was yolk peritonitis. Also, it sounds like if there is a liver issue with chickens they don't get yellow like other animals.

Here's the thread I read. http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/25461 … s-jaundice
