We did it. We just bought

the set up for bees.  Eeeeeeeeeek, I'm so excited.    We brought home the starter kit with the brooder assembly and 2 supers to stack on top.  We have ordered our Nuc and should expect delivery sometime in May or June.  A new venture begins.   We will be on the look out for a honey extractor (centrifuge) and some information.

I would be very happy to listen to any advice that you all have.

Bees are my DHs thing not really mine but they are very interesting and nothing beats extracting and sampling your own fresh honey!

:congrats:

Re: We did it. We just bought

Thanks everyone.  I've been busy reading up on beekeeping.  I'm wondering if we should order a second hive and Nuc right away.  Some say you should start with 2 so you have something to compare with.

Re: We did it. We just bought

We started with 2 the first year and I am glad we did. One did really well and produced lots of honey and survived the winter. The other hive never really did very well, no real honey to harvest, and didn't make it through the first winter.

Re: We did it. We just bought

We started beekeeping last year. Well we tried. Both hives died or abandoned us. Noticed by sept. That one hive fled, our other hive was not strong and did not make it through this harsh winter. We are starting with two new boxed bees this spring.
We had nucs last year, but got them over a month later than we could get boxed bees. This year we figured the boxed bees were better because we could get them early. I will for sure have sugar solution available for them all spring and summer to make sure they are strong for winter.
We had ants trying to get the sugar, but our local bee people said that shouldn't be a big issue.
