Sad day. 2 major fires in 2 months.

I'm feeling sick right now.  St. Jacobs Farmers Market has burned down to the ground.  This location has been a tourist attraction for more years than I even know.  There will be several people out of jobs and many artisans have lost their life work.   I live about 2 km from this location.  We walk there very often to buy the fruit, veggies and meat that our local Mennonites have to offer.  Home made jams and pickles, all kinds of baking and crafts.  Such a sad day.

Now to make things even worse, on July 12, a fire in the same area (maybe a km away) burned to the ground as well.  A young boy of 2 years, lost his life in that fire.

I am about 2 KM away travelling the road.  Much less distance as the crow flies.   My property is covered in ash.  This could have been so much worse for us.  If that ash still had hot embers, I don't even want to think of what could have happened.  My whole body is shaking right now.

I don't watch the news or get the paper so I would have not know about this for awhile.  How sad!!  You right it has been there as long as I can remember as well, used to travel up with my parents as a child.  Mum would load up with food stuffs, only place she could get Elderberry pie :eat:

Did the stock yards get hit as well???  I know a lot of my neighbors got up there on Tuesdays to the auction.

The flea market and the live market seem to be fine.  I don't know about smoke or water damage.  I'm not ready to go look just yet.  School is starting tomorrow and so many of the children will be sad.  Many of their parents had businesses in the building.

Heard the city has been trying to get them stockyards out of there for over 3 years now.  They have had a back up as they did buy land about 3 years ago but still have to build.

Sorry Paula.  I fixed the links.  You can access them now.

I don't know what the claim the cause to be.    Funny, rather weird, thing is that now there will be 3 major hotels there and no market.  How convenient for the people that want a Casino in the area.

You are very close to it there Bessie glad to hear they got it contained and it didn't spread!  Fortunately the Stockyards are not affected and they will hold their Tuesday sale tomorrow.

Re: Sad day. 2 major fires in 2 months.

Thats's very sad. I'm sure most vendors don't have insurance on their items and for some the items burned probably represent months or years of effort. I shudder to think what the investigation will find. It sounds like it was an old building. Hopefully they rebuild even better :happycrowd"

Well the original building was old but they had added to it over the years.  I feel so bad for the vendors and yes hopefully insurance will cover it but there was a lot of hand made items and just the effort that goes into that.
