Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

Just to let you all know, out of the 30 eggs shipped to me from Paula, I got 27 to lockdown! They went in yesterday and should be pipping by tomorrow. I need you all to send me some witchy voodoo hatching vibes magic to get as many out as possible! If this means painting yourself blue and dancing around your mailbox then so be it! They eggs looked so good all through the incubating process I really couldn't believe it. I had heard so many stories of how many shipped eggs don't even develop. I'm all worked up and waiting now to see how many make it out. The pictures of Paula's birds are so amazing. They are such nice EO types that I'm dying to see what I get! Updates and Photos on the way!

I used a styrofoam fish crate to expand my hovabator to near epic proportions. I can easily fit over 60 eggs inside now. I glued the hovabator top to the top of the fish crate with a hole cut in it, and used the cut-out bits to make water channels in the crate.

Re: Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

I just watched an EO hatch fro one of your eggs Pauls...and he's black! Silkieoiloa? or maybe a sport? Would that just be the coolest thing ever, if we got Beltza all by accident? I'm thinking one of your ladies had an illicit affair =D:whistle:

OOPS! Nope, false alarm. Its a barred rock. SO far there are 3 of each and a bunch pipped. Looking good!

lol, like being at work will stop anyone from obsessing ... but you won't be able to wear a path into the floor towards the incubator  happy hatching!

Re: Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

OK Final count is in. I had 15 EO's hatch from 27 eggs in lock down, but 2 appear to have bum legs and can't stand up yet. Will probably have to cull those two. I had 20 barred rocks hatch out of 30 eggs that made it to lock down. So that is a hatch rate of 55% for the EO's (48% with the two I shall probably need to cull). 67% hatch rate on the barred rocks. I'm a bit disappointed after getting all 27 EO's to lock down. Many EO's pipped and didn't finish, some even got mostly zipped and just gave up. I'm not certain if it was due to being shipped, or if my incubator was too wet at 63%. I also had a high lock down humidity as I was scared of shrink wrapping. On a positive note I have 13 healthy chicks that are not closely related to my own birds. If I get from that 2 good cockerels and 3-4 good pullets I will consider the venture a success. I will be banding these guys as their own "family" when they are a little bigger. Thanks so much Paula for your eggs and all the care you took in wrapping and packing them. You have babies in Nova Scotia now!

In this last pic you can see a telltale mark on the head of one chick. Is this a sign that it may be a pullet?

Re: Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

Oh I am so sorry the others didn't hatch, when I see they are struggling I do the big bad and help them out.  Well the bad legs seem to come with the EO's I had to cull 2 from my last hatch.

The babies you do have are beautiful

I am going to make a prediction of 8 pullets and 7 cockerels just by the fluff colour.  But don't hold me to that :chairhide:, LOL

Re: Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

M&K I am just making a just for "fun" prediction on sex.  It has seemed in the past that the darker fluff chicks like the one in the bottom left above the 2 that are together and with the darker dot on the head seem to be pullets and the lighter ones cockerels........but what do I know

I have been know to mix up the sexes in the past :chairhide:

Re: Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

I've heard that!  :funny:   But then again, I posted 15 photos of "pullets" last Spring that ended up being cockerals.

Whichever they are  RBF, they are adorable and will add lots of fun (and dust) to your house!

RBF - the dark spot on the head is the columbian gene indicator.

Re: Hatch from Flat Rock Farm: These eggs have traveled!

OK so if it is the columbian gene indicator...what does that mean for the chick? Will it have stronger columbian markings at neck and tail?

Had visitors come to the farm today to pick up Barred Rock eggs, and they went over to the EO run to see them, well you can imagine the show those shameless hams put on for the guests! This lady had wanted EO eggs, but my girls were in moult so she agreed to just buy the Barred Rocks earlier in the week. Her two little girls played with the EO youngsters for about half an hour, picking up the pullets and even Melvin, the "somewhat reformed" foot pecker with no problems at all. They were in love instantly, which was exactly as those EO's planned it all along. SHe left with three dozen Barred Rock eggs, plus all 5 EO eggs that I had been saving for my own hatch. :banginghead:

Ahh well, who am I to stand in the way of love?:love::love:
