First hatch of the year: spitz, turkey & d'uccles

A few photos of the new arrivals.
1 Ridley bronze turkey (1 more still in the incubator drying). 4 more eggs sadly not even a pip but fully developed.
1 Spitz (only 1 egg of 13 was fertile!)
And 9 d'uccles from two different pairs.
No EOs yet but I have started to collect eggs...

Re: First hatch of the year: spitz, turkey & d'uccles

Sounds like your Spitz aren't feeling spring yet!  I had that problem 2 years ago.  So I put my 2 back up boys in the pen too and all the eggs were fertile after that.  Maybe you could take the rooster out a for a few days so they are happy to see each other again.  You guys are already hatching, I'm still trying to figure out how to separate everyone and where to house chicks!  No chicks until spring here.

Those tiny d'uccle chicks sure are cute too.

Gubi, I have 5 fertile spitz out of 13 due to hatch in 2 weeks and the rooster has definately been more active the past couple weeks since I moved them to their new pen. I might set a few more a bit later on.

Re: First hatch of the year: spitz, turkey & d'uccles

I do love the Brinsea brooders Monika! I have a 20 and a 50. I wish they made one somewhere in between in size as that would be just perfect!

One more turkey made it so at least there are two. I think they need to incubate drier, their air cells didn't look big enough to me.

:congrats: I just had my first turkey hatch (bourbon Red) but it died after 5 days I was so disappointed I think it got cold.

Re: First hatch of the year: spitz, turkey & d'uccles

So sorry to hear your turkey didn't make it ChrisH, they are pretty sensitive to any kind of chilling.

So far my two turkeys and the chicks are doing really well. I have some different chick down colors in the d'uccles resulting from different pairs. Looks like some are birchen for the e allele and the other extended black. Kinda neat!

Re: First hatch of the year: spitz, turkey & d'uccles

Ah Paula, you had me at Hello. I took these pictures when there were two days old. The lavender show it too but the black are much clearer to see.

This is one of Ivy and Ozzies babies. I think this chick is showing a Brichen e-series allele. The birchen probably comes from Mille fleur being in Ivy's lineage. I think on the black cockerels there will be more potential to see red leakage, on the lavender bronze leakage.

This is Victoria and Adrian's chick. They are both the result of my breeding last year so one more generation along. I beleive this baby is homozygous for extended black on the e-series alleles. Not the tiny white dots by its beak along with more of a penguin chick down. This is the e-allele I want my lavender and black d'uccles to have as they should stay more of a solid color.

I have more from both crosses scheduled to hatch later this week so i'll see if they are the same. And I'll see if my theory holds true down the road 5 or 6 months from now as well.
