Winter hardy EO's

We finally have a bit of snow but the EO's don't seam to mind.  The chicken door is open 24/7 except for a couple of really cold nights so far.  +9 by the weekend so the snow will be gone again.  I'm glad I'm not a snowmobiler.

Herd of Brown Swiss, a few sheep, red cuckoo basque, Silverspangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben, ameraucanas(EE), Welsummer, broodie silkies and a few more heritage hens

Re: Winter hardy EO's

Yes Gubi Mine are like that too. If I look outside in the winter snow the only birds outside are the EO's.  :cozy: We just moved everyone inside the barn but I wish I had waited a bit longer as the temperatures are going to go up.

Some of us are driven by the need to make animals a part of our lives. We are soothed by their presence, fascinated by their behavior, and amused by their antics.

Mine our in now too and I'm thinking of putting an electric poultry fence up in such as way that when the weather is nice they can get outside.  Great photo!

All the best,

It's funny mine won't go out.  I open the the door and there is snow on the ramp, they won't go down so I shoveled off the ramp.   Now they go down the ramp but won't jump to the ground with snow :duh:

Re: Winter hardy EO's

I took my net down around new years last winter and then put it back up again at the end of January I think.  I'll leave it up as long as possible this year.  I just have to watch it when the snow melts that it doesn't pull the fence down.  I went all around today and pulled the fence out of the snow.
It was a beautiful sunny day today and by afternoon most hens were outside.  The roosters for some reason are like your hens Paula they wont come out of their pen except for the lucky once that are in with the hens.
