Yellow - My Cockerel

here are some photos of 'Yellow'
I think he is pretty handsome. so far no pure white tail feathers, just half.
With some of his girls. His favorite is the 'blue' orpington in front.

Not a very good photo, but it shows his width.

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

Very, very nice! He'll get more grey on the chest and more white in the tail feathers, but is well built with a good comb and friendly expression. I'd use him for sure !

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

Oh I do like him, he has wonderful feather color, width and what a lovely comb (I am a comb snob) He also has yellow legs and beak. I believe he is very close to what the standard calls for, correct me if I wrong! He is almost identical to my roo except mine does not have the nice yellow legs. And Yellow has a nice comb where mine does not!

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

Thanks for posting photos of Yellow.  My first pen of EO's has two boys that are 19 weeks old and two girls that are 17 weeks.  I am to the point that I am looking for all the photos of cockerels with good EO body type that I can find so I know what to select for.

My 2nd pen of EO's has more than a dozen 9 weeks old juvenlies running around.

When all else fails, go spend time with your chickens. :)

Pens are currently filled with Red Cuckoo (Marraduna) and Red Basque (Gorria) breeders, Spitz, and Seramas.

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I thought he was handsome, but a mother always thinks their babies are beautiful.

Question: he used to have a beak with some darker markings, but seems to have 'grown' of of them. Is it possible tha they will 'grow' back in? I didn't think the beak grew that much. And if it does grow then I don't understand how they cut the top part of the beak off on industry chickens and not have it grow.

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

I remember his beak pigment NP....I would say that if his beak is yellow now it will likely stay that way.

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

I decided to add some detail photos to this thread. It was a nice day and I got some good photos. I have other feather details, but wasn't sure if this helpful/interesting or not.

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

What beautiful quality photos NP!

Aside from his extra comb point (I would call that 8 points, right?) his head is quite stunning.

I personally think the quality of his barring is also very nice. We need to keep in mind EO are cuckoo barred, not barred with the slow feathering gene like the Plymouth barred rocks are, so their bars will never be as crisp and clean as that and aren't expected to be.

His shanks are a beautiful yellow. when he was young did he ever show a hint of green to his shanks? I find that there are a few weeks where the young cockerels will show the green or blue legs (if they carry the allele) before it is masked. that's how I tell if the roosters carry that trait.

I really love his dark gold color. He only has very small amounts of grey or black in his chest which is a good sign. Of course he does have some white in his tail that will become more pronounced with age but I have definately seen worse.

Does he have a nice personality to go along with all those good looks NP?

Re: Yellow - My Cockerel

PG, He does have too many points on his comb, but figured that was a small issue compared to other things that could be wrong. His legs have always been very yellow. I don't remember them being tinted with any other color.

His personality has been really nice. He came at me once when I had my cordless phone with me (other people talking during a phone meeting) so i don't know if it was that or something else that made him come at me. I grabbed him and held him for a good amount of time and haven't had trouble with him since.

I'm really excited that you guys like him so much. I'm such a proud momma. :excited:
