Cockrels

Our cockrels are 5 months old now and have worn out their welcome so they are off next week for a one way car ride :-(.  I could probably grow them out a little more but some are a very good weight and I am very pleased with the breed in that respect.  It will be interesting to see what weight they come back as.  I am amazed the price of having them processed doesn't seem to have gone up since I had some done at least a decade ago.  Only $3.10/bird.  At that price I don't know why anyone would do their own?  But I understand processing plants aren't as plentiful as they used to be so if one has to travel a great distance it would be a nuisance.

Paula, I'll be keeping one of your hatchlings as my main man.  I think he is very, very nice.  A good size/weight (I've got bigger and smaller), good feather colour which generally becomes richer with age, good comb with no sprigs (I think) and his character seems to be very good, neither friendly nor frightened, just likes to keep his nose clean :-)))  I hope he keeps that attitude and we'll all get along real good.   I'd love to know what others think of him.

Here is a picture of one cockrel that is double-jointed!  I'm sure I'll be able to pick him out of the freezer :-)

Re: Cockrels

I like your keeper.  he may get more black on his chest as he gets older, but will still be a good breeder.  My Curly had a blacker chest than him and has thrown lots of young with barely any.  I like your guy's face.  He looks a touch distracted there, but it's a kind face.  He is going to get bigger yet.  Between 5 and 8 months, they widen up even more.  Then on their 2nd and 3rd birthday's they are way bigger than the year before!

Re: Cockrels

He was funny. I went looking for him to take his pictures and found him in the barn.  I bent down and said "come out for your picture" and he slowly walked around through the gateway.  Concentrating on each step.  No intention of coming near me, but curious nonetheless.

I'd like to wait a while longer before finishing them but I'd have to build another pen for them and I'm busy enough as it is so maybe by the Fall I'll have another area to grow out more cockrels.  Right now they are loose most of the time.  They aren't fighting at all, the hens certainly wouldn't mind some of the pressure off of them :-)  and I have to lock them up if I am having company over.  When I have a nice outdoor pen for them I'll be happier.

I'd love to invite everyone over for Basque Chicken dinner!  It would be great to meet a few more fanciers.

Re: Cockrels

Susan thanks for posting his picture, he did turn out to be a handsome boy.  Good feather colour and nice yellow legs, he got those from his Daddy as all my breeding hens this year have white legs.  I think he is worth keeping as your "main man" LOL

Re: Cockrels

Yes he I think he is very handsome.  As soon as everyone starts laying I will hatch out some more eggs and hopefully have a new pen to keep the cockrels in.  Pretty head shot.

Re: Cockrels

Ha, ha.  I was just out putting all the beasts to bed and I saw one of the cockrels jump on the back of a lamb and breed it--twice!  Obviously not enough hens to go around
