My 12-week old EOs and odd fellow

I have 7 young birds from my Easter hatch from Skyline which are now 12 weeks old - 4 cockerels and 2 pullets.

(Just hanging out...)

The pullets are both regular Marraduna-coloring, perhaps tending a bit towards "blondie"-ness.  One has nice yellow legs and the other has white legs.  Yeah, I named them.  They are the "Marys" - Marisol and Maribel.

I don't want to use any of my 12-week old cockerels.  I hatched some eggs from Glen (Maggiesdad) and gave him back most of the cockerels, but my broody hen also hatched four and I let her keep all of those.  I thought all four were cockerels, but they seem to be growing more slowly than my indoor chicks.  Now I think one is a pullet, and one died (my fault), so I have two left that I am hoping will be nice cockerels for me. I hope to keep one of those.

Anyway, one of my guys is recessive white.  He has long legs and good size but a very high tail angle and is, um, white.

This guy is the smallest of the cockerels, but he has the best coloring.  He also has width in the back whereas the other boys are more pointed towards their rear.  On the negative side, he was the smallest guy all along, even smaller than the girls, and he's a bit knock-kneed.  He might grow out of both of those things.  Don't know.

This guy is too grey but has nice carroty-yellow legs.  He's also the top dog at the moment and a bit gruff.  Not bad, though, personality-wise.  My main concern with him is that he might have a wry tail.  He holds it at an angle most of the time.  I'll have to get my hands on him and see if I can feel what he's got under there.

Now, here is my odd fellow.  What the heck?!?  He was the one with stong barring as a chick (I'll repost the picture here) and "rusty" brown coloring as he feathered out.  He also has a beard.  ?!?!? From Skyline, though, so I'm fairly certain he is not a mix.  He has been the biggest guy from the beginning and has a docile attitude.  He has white legs but with a good, wide stance.  I like him, but he is not going to fit what I am doing.  If I had the room for a million pens, I might make a project out of him...

As a chick:

So, that's what I've got right now.  I also have what I think are 6 pullets and 2 cockerels which are 2 weeks old from Glen's eggs.  I'll post pictures of them at some point.... Those pullets are very flighty without little cockerels in there with them!

I think maybe fluffy cheeks is a cross, I have never seen an EO like that. Maybe a cross with an americauna.

Your girls look nice. Maybe as you said a bit on the "Blondie" side but still nice.

It always amazes me how much diversity there still is in this breed...

Beautiful babies! Isn't it Funny how they are all wonderful birds and yet we point out their faults as quick as we point out the attributes. I do it too and yet l love each one. I know in order to breed them, we must. I am grateful to have a laying flock for table eggs. That way I can keep them all :) I think you have some great birds. Definitely worth working with. The unknown boy is an Euskal Oiloa/ Ameracauna cross I bet.

You think that could happen at Skyline?   I just checked the list of breeds on his website, and it doesn't look like he keeps EEs or Amerauanas.

No idea.  I'll sell him as a mutt, though.  He's pretty, but nowhere near EO-ish.

Does he have an EO personality?

Hmm.  He's a bit more retiring than some of the others, but the little guy isn't as bold as the others either.  I don't know, maybe he is a mix.  I would just find it a bit surprising coming from James...

Anyway, I have a number of little chicks from Glen's (MD's) flock.  I looked at the pictures of my Skyline birds at a week old when the first wing feathers were in.  NP had observed that the pullets had more buff coloring in their first feathers while the cockerels had white wing feathers, and I had found the same with my batch.  So, I tried to select all pullets to keep and gave Glen back what I thought were the cockerels.  Now they are nearing 3 weeks old, and I think I have a mix of cockerels and pullets, some with almost exactly the same feathering, so I am thinking it didn't really hold in the 2nd generation.  We'll see though.  This might just be the time when I think all of my chicks are cockerels, but I can usually be pretty sure around 5 weeks or so when combs start to redden up.  I'll hold off on deciding.

I will say that they are awesome little chicks, Glen!  They are robust, fat-bellied little things with yellow legs and pretty coloring.  I should take some pictures at some point, but I have been going a little crazy with my 4+ groups of chickens here.  I don't really have the infrastructure for so many separate groups, so I've been making more work for myself.  I need to streamline it a bit before I go to a conference next week and leave all of the chores to my husband.

We never lost power, and our water is back up now.  We fared well in the storm because we are tucked into a little mountain hollow.  It was scary and windy, but I think the worst of it couldn't touch us down here between the rocks.  One ash tree came down behind the house and other stuff blew around, that's about it.  We were very lucky.
