chick with a dislocated hip

I have a eo chick about a month old and she somehow dislocated her hip.  Her leg is turned, I can turn it back no problem but it just flips back when i let go of it.  I taped it to the other leg to hold it there but when I went back to check she somehow got the hockey tape off.

Has anyone successfully fixed this or should I just put her down

Edited for spelling :chairhide:

Re: chick with a dislocated hip

I don't think it can be repaired if has popped out, someone correct me if I am wrong.

I have had about three this year with it and I culled them all

Re: chick with a dislocated hip

I have an adult hen here that insured her hip as a pullet during a thunderstorm when their house blew over.  She walks funny on it but seems to be doing well otherwise.

Re: chick with a dislocated hip

PC, Sorry to hear about your pullet.  I tried once with a  3-4 month EE pullet (it's all on ACE), and in the end I am not sure it was dislocated.  I have had birds "go over" unable to walk and the one we had autopsied around the time of the others in 2010, had osteoarthritis (at 3 months), the hip was fused they said they fractured it separating it

The upshot is if she looks she is suffering it may be best to let her go.  That first pullet I nursed for weeks in a sling hung with rubber bands with holes cut out for her legs and vent so she could exercise her legs and if I had know the eventual outcome, I would have let her go earlier.  Sorry I am not more help, there were some good comments and suggestions on there that may help you.

English was never one of my strength.  It would be even worse without spellcheck! :funny:

Re: chick with a dislocated hip

Trouble is my German isn't any better.  Give me math or science any day there is logic involved but writing. :stomp:
