Black Mottled D'uccle chicks!

Well these are the first ones I hatched this year, they look like "Happy Feet".  I had to take them out of the brooder with the EO's as they pecked their feet feather until they bled.
They are so cute!!!

Oh my lord they DO look like Happy Feet!!

I will have to watch the EOs with the d'uccles, last year I can't remember them pecking the feather feet but I will watch carefully this year.

Paula,

Those are gorgeous! :congrats: Did they come from Brigitte?

When all else fails, go spend time with your chickens. :)

Pens are currently filled with Red Cuckoo (Marraduna) and Red Basque (Gorria) breeders, Spitz, and Seramas.

Lisa no they did not come from Brigitte, they cam e from cjones on PSO.

PG it's funny the lav. d'uccles are in the the EO's and they don't touch them???  As soon as I put these little fellows in they swarmed them to peck at their feet until they started to bleed.

Re: Black Mottled D'uccle chicks!

Are their foot feathers white?  I have heard new white feathers look like maggots and chicks will go for them.  I once took a batch of 1-2 week old white chanties to Ottawa for Joan and they had all been Blue-koted on their backs to  stop the picking.  you could try blue koting them if they are white and see if they leave them as the lavenders may have darker foot feathers.

Re: Black Mottled D'uccle chicks!

Yes the leg feathers are white but so are the FWM chicks that are in the brooder with the EO's  and they haven't bothered with them.

It's fine, the bantam hatch is in the shed in a rodent cage with a heat lamp for my cat "Chloe" to watch over them.
