Round Three chickies (No EOS)

My four hatchlings that are Henry's progeny. I'm working on teaching them some chorus line steps, but only one of them seems to get the hang of it...

I'm thinking 2 boys 2 girls here.

My SS chicks - maybe 1 boy 2 girls?

Re: Round Three chickies (No EOS)

Looks like you might have a roo in that Henry group. Are you girls still free ranging without Henry? Or is everyone in lockdown (note: this is different from hatching lockdown all you Easter hatchers)

Love the photo with you foot in the air. I would love to see how you took that photo! :pics:

Re: Round Three chickies (No EOS)

Everyone is in total lockdown until the chicken moat around the garden is complete. Midnite and Bridgitte are relegated to the tractor until Midnight's wounds heal. Nobody gets out unless armed chickherds are on duty... :P

Re: Round Three chickies (No EOS)

We had the same sort of thing here with a chciken stealing fox. We spent a lot of time and money putting in 300' of welded wire fencing and wooden gates to protect everyone. Of course we aren't clear of airborne assaults or fence climbing raccoons but at least we made it harder for them

Some of us are driven by the need to make animals a part of our lives. We are soothed by their presence, fascinated by their behavior, and amused by their antics.

Re: Round Three chickies (No EOS)

I'm pulling the breeding coops closer to the house, cutting a doggie door into the utility room exit, and giving Angus and Mitsy free run of the chicken moat too.

The foxes are calling it "The Compound" !

Here's where my hatching eggs came from   http://www.sleepyhollowkikos.com/chickens.php   I wanted a batch of SS to work into my egglayers,  but her SS girls just weren't putting out, so I took some silkie and polish eggs to get a even dozen...  Variety is the spice of life, eh? If the Silkies turn out to be girls I'm going to try sticking EO eggs under them...  I want to run my EO line a close to natural as possible.

Re: Round Three chickies (No EOS)

Lovely birds and pics!   I am impressed that no one pooped for the pictures!   Usually 1 will when you have three!    Glad the girls are enjoying the chicks!  They are certainly getting lots of attention.

I think you are right on the sex, look how thick the legs are on your SS on the left!.  Early on, Siikies I  find comb width (wider are boys) and size/weight is the best indicator.  There's a stage in the middle for a few months before they crow where you are completely guessing!

Re: Round Three chickies (No EOS)

Glen great pictures, well it seems the one chick in the first picture is getting the hang of the front leg kick, along with you in the background :funny:
They sure are growing, love the Polish and the silkies are adorable.  Glad the one Polish is taking a shine to Caroline.  They especially need protection from predators, once those crests fill in they can't see much.

Agreed on both counts.  What adorable chicks and beautiful sunshine - love these pictures.  They all look great, and that's quite a variety you have there!  I love my Sussexes, and I have their progeny here hatching now.  They are friendly and curious - you are sure to enjoy them.
