Round Four chickies

Oddball, 4 EOs and 12 Barred Rocks.

EO at 7oclock has a lucky toe...

Everybody but the EOs looks around and says 'what is all this green stuff?'  - EOs say Food! :applause:

Re: Round Four chickies

I see his little toe!

You can tell male from female barred rock right away can't you MD? I think I see mostly pullets if grey = roo.

And I am with you non EO chicks....what IS all that green stuff? :cozy:

Re: Round Four chickies

I read somewhere that small, tight head dots and dark shanks on day old chick indicates pullets (Thai Farm sexing Barred Rocks).

I asked at the feed store if I could select the chicks I wanted and they said yes. There must have been 300 chicks in the 150 gal tank brooder - I couldn't see their legs... and when I pulled my 12 out, I couldn't tell any were gone from the brooder. They said they were straight run, but there were a lot of big splotchy heads in there! I'm hoping I did well, these girls are for my egg flock. They are from Mt. Healthy.

Well I hope I don't have it backwards :chairhide: females will likely have to darker pigment on the front of their shanks. Also you should be able to feather sex barred rock with females growing wing feathers faster than males.

Either way, eggs or :eat: they are cute!

Re: Round Four chickies

They are definitely feathering out at different speeds. Maggie wanted to pick her own, and so did her brother. What's a Dad to do? I couldn't say no... if they are roos it"s their fault. :funny:

Hah! 5 toes and it isn't a Silkoiloa from me! I still feel bad for poor Monika sending her 3 by mistake! How do you think yours came about MD?

But I'm glad those four are here!  thumbsup:

Re: Round Four chickies

Cute little chicks Glen.  Yes the female barred rocks will look like they have a gray or black spray painted looking front to the legs.  And the pullets will generally look darker in color the roosters and the header dot will be smaller and more localized.

Interesting about that 5th toe!  Cute little dudes! it is so obvious when you compared it euros to other breeds that they are much more switched on. They certainly adapt quickly to their surroundings.  :jumping: :congrats:
