Great pictures Heidi, I  the blue orpington.  Yes those legs look blue or willow with a tinge of blue.  I have had yellow with greenish legs here.

The Orpingtons are such a different breed. Look at the size of this girl. Fingers-crossed it's a pullet.

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

Beautiful birds.  :jumping:  They are lovely... that looks like blue legs to me, she is a pretty pullet.  The Gorria we had way back had blue wellingtons like that.  Wheaten and pertidge Penedesencas have them blue like that and Derbyshire Redcaps.   Your roos are nice and gold.  Lovely!

NP you have beautiful birds! That white EO is very pretty, it amazes me how much diversity there is in the colors. Does he behave any differently than the other EOs? Friendlier, skittish etc? Just curious.

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

So those blue legs are on my correctly colored pullet. Does that mean she should not be bred? One of my gold Roos has nice yellow legs. would I be able to use him with her? My other pullet is the one with the curled toe and the redish, deer color her legs are willow, I think. I wasnt going to bred her.

White roo is the biggest, out of the 6 week olds. He is pretty friendly. Was the main one who visited me today while they were outside, besides the older chicks. I sit in the yard with them and some of the small ones come over but the older ones chase them off most of the time. The white roo kept coming back. The gold roo with the green band is the friendliest, but not when they are free ranging just not when they are free ranging. The pullet is a love bug. She wants to cuddle.

Even if I can't breed with the birds I have now they sure are the sweetest chickens. The Welsummers are nice but seem very docile and the Orpingtons are very standoffish still. I hope that they get friendlier. The Marans crosses, olive Eggers are really hard to catch. They want nothing to do with me.

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

I have only had a couple of blue leggers and I didn't breed them, though I had bred whites.  I still don't have my head around the outcome of a blue hen x with yellow roo, PG will know. The ones friendly in enclosed spaces will get friendlier when free ranged and they mature in my experience.

You are about right, Wellies are very pleasant and mild mannered and attentive.  Sweet birds.  They can be bullied by bossier chickens so watch out for that.  Temperament can vary by strain, the orpingtons may get friendlier around POL.  I have only had 2 or 3 EEs that I'd called friendly and over 50 that weren't.

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

I am breeding hens with blue legs to a yellow rooster this year. Not saying I recommend it but I consider leg color fairly easy to fix. But if blue legs in your EOs are something you want to eliminate quickly I would not use her for breeding.

Blue legs are white legs (W/w probably) with the dermal melanin added in (id/-). If you cross her with a yellow legged roo you will probably yet some yellow legged chicks but you may also get some green, blue or green legs especially on the pullets. The roosters can hide the blue or green trait where as with a hen what you see is what you get.

Some of the colors of your EOs are very nice NaturesPace, lots of really nice golden brown without much grey. Your whole flock is lovely in fact!

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

After a couple of more weeks, I have noticed the white EO, now 7 weeks old, is the largest and friendliest.  He loves to cuddle. The pullet is also a cuddler. He is getting so big I mistake him for the roo who is 5 weeks older sometimes! his coloring is almost like a splash. Is he lacking the barring gene or would I be able to use him for breeding? The other two Roolets have really nice color and barring. Their personalities are very nice too. I guess I have until fall before I really need to make any decisions.

I'm going to be out of town for a few days this week.  I know when I get back they will be laying eggs and crowing.

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

I have a white EO, not sure yet but I think it's a pullet.  Haven't noticed it being any friendlier than the others, yet.  I also have a mystery chicken, that is white with cheek muffs and green legs.  It hatched with the EO eggs and Easter Eggers...but I have no white EE's

Re: 11 week & 6 week olds

My sister hatched out some of my EO eggs and Ameraucana eggs.  She's got a white one with ear muffs.  I am assuming it is a white Ameraucana as I've seen those before when ordering from Murray McMurray.
