There`s nothing cutier than a baby chick. The little Sikies are adorable. :congrats:

Some of us are driven by the need to make animals a part of our lives. We are soothed by their presence, fascinated by their behavior, and amused by their antics.

That's my oldest daughter in the photo, Maggie was off somewhere that afternoon - both are accomplished chickherds, though!

Re: mixed flock chicks from last weekend's hatch

nice bunch of chicks. those Sussex do look like my Welsumers. I'm having doubts that mine are all girls, there is one that is getting pretty big. it's comb and legs are huge. I'm starting to think i have all boys. HAHA just paranoia.

That Sussex looks like it's going to take your head off. be careful. I can't take those Polish seriously... and I'm Polish.

LOL! I couldn't decide whether it was a 'get back' or a 'come hither' look! And the Polish look like something out of Dr Seuss. One thing is for sure, they're no Basque Hens! All 4 varieties are standoffish and want nothing to do with me or the kids. I can barely catch them and the twins, well, I'm thinking candid camera or funniest home videos...

Well just keep handling them, they will get used to it.  Especially the silkies.

Now you see why we like the EO's so much!  My Black Pennies and Lavender Ameraucanas are like that and the odd Chantecler too.  I love friendly chickens   I have most of my breed selected for that!

If you wanted to try another breed insanely friendly like the EOs, the Silver penciled Wyandottes from McMurrays tug at your shoelaces and jump on your knee too.  Or the little purple chickens are up their too!

This evening when I went to shut the coops for the night, I saw one of the EO cockerels from the Round One hatch measuring me out of the corner of my eye. Sure enough, he launched at me and I threw up my arm to block him, thinking - OK, so this is what it's like to be attacked by a rooster...

Nope, He just wanted an evening cuddle! He settled down and made happy noises there on my arm... Claire! It's all your fault!

(Note to self - 6lb rooster on bare skin = owwww)

Re: mixed flock chicks from last weekend's hatch

:funny: I just had a good visual in my head.  But the approach is some what similar your not sure if they want a cuddle or attack.  My two boys don't cuddle they have each had a go at me, but have pinned them down a couple of times and they seem to be respectful now.  I never keep my eyes off them regardless.
Another supper friendly chicken in the bantam cochins, I have the silver laced and frizzle but the silver laced run at the door when I come in, it's hard not to step on their feet feathers :chook:

Re: mixed flock chicks from last weekend's hatch

I love it Glen. :funny: My 2 year old Pet EO roo does that or I'll be crouching down in the batchelor run talking to the boys then he will alight from behind onto my shoulder.  It's a bit of a shock sometimes, and the pen cover is only 4 feet so I can't stand up fast either!  Yes the bugger gets on my shoulder and crows like crazy! Loud :duh:  They do scrape a bare arms a bit.   I usually pick them off and get them tuck under my arm where they don't wobble.  It's always the boys that want to get that close too!

I find EO's have a rotten sense of balance and wobble a lot (as do wheaten Ameraucanas)-doesn't stop em getting up though!  When Specky was about 6 months old I had him on my arm at at head height, coming off the top off a coop, and he wobbled and grabbed my chin to hang on....there was a purple indentation there for weeks.  I can still feel the triangular dent!

Re: mixed flock chicks from last weekend's hatch

CR,

You may actually NEED silkies - what will you do if you have a few eggs that just NEED to be hatched and your incubator is full? Or you don't want to start it for just 4 or 5 eggs? I like to think of my silkies as emergency egg workers, always on call... =D

Besides, they have a totally high cuteness factor (even when they are not being mamas) and provide eggs quite regularly (even though they are small). They also get along well with everybody - my pair of sisters have been keeping a d'uccle cockeral company all winter. You can tuck them in just about anyplace.

Need more convincing??? ;)

:doI?:
