Side sprig on 8- 1/2 wk old cockerel

Just noticed this a couple of days ago on my red banded roo from round one. First chance we had to take pics.

It's on the other side also, but not as prominent.

Eye color is changing, too.

Nice quality picture (as always). And yes, the little dude definitely has a side sprig. So many of mine had them last year, I think it is going to take some time to get rid of that problem in the breed. Not major but if you don't select against it when choosing breeders next thing you know they will ALL have them.

Yep, that's a side sprig of the 11 rooster I hatched only one had it.  What a handsome boy, from what I can see he has nice feather colour

These guys change feather color like Virginia weather - if you don't like it today, it will be different tomorrow!

Two of the four roos have a delightful shade of red coming in right now.

Re: Side sprig on 8- 1/2 wk old cockerel

I have to say that is an extremely cute little dude (and sprig actually).  Better if it wasn't there, but it definitely is one.  As far as I can tell side sprigs is a recessive problem in many single combed breeds not just these boys.  We have found they do vary from side to side with these and the Penedesencas.  It seems like our EO boys get them more than the pullets here so far.

Re: Side sprig on 8- 1/2 wk old cockerel

Great info  Happy to see a close up of a side sprig. That is final conformation that Elevator doesn't have one.
I have only one Maradunna like that but I have another with the Pendescenca crown

All the best,

The two marraduna roo's I was going to keep have these, can I still use them for breeding?

Re: Side sprig on 8- 1/2 wk old cockerel

They will be more likely to create chicks with sidesprigs PC so it's a choice you need to make. To me side sprigs are leases important than other traits bit if a bird has one it is a disqualification at a show. I think the key would be to let anyone who buys eggs or young birds from you know what to expect.

I would keep one as a back up roo but with the hopes that you don't have to use him.
