Wow are they growing up! You're going to have your own little breeding flock by spring (in Alberta spring is not until April or May ;))

Do you think the crooked toe is genetic or due to hatching conditions? He is such a nice boy otherwise. I think in my reading over the weekend I saw somewhere a gene for congenital crooked toes. But then I have had birds with really crooked toes and I know it was from the incubator being too warm so it's not always genetic.

Re: Oh island Girl... how about some pics?

too bad about the foot on that cockerel!  He's such a nice guy otherwise.  With the amount of crooked toes we are seeing in the EO's I bet it is genetics.  My crooked toed roosters where the heaviest of the batch when I butchered them.  On the crooked toed EO's I had they all curled to the inside never like your guys.  The first cockerel is nice too, I wonder if that colour is the male colouration of Claire's Blondies?  How does he compare weight wise with the others?  The cockerels that I had of that colour were lighter then the steely grey breasted roosters.  I like the red pullet.

Re: Oh island Girl... how about some pics?

Lovely birds! So pretty and I bet they are friendly too!!  Thanks for posting the pics! :pics:

The 2 coloured like that first boy in my sibling hatch around the same time are big, I think bigger than the darker boys.  One of them is the honker that won't shut up, looks very like that first dude.  Both my peach/grey boys have whitey blue legs.  The honker is pathologically greedy and so he is big.  He will hang his own flock of one wherever the densest food distribution is, needless to say we won't be using him.  It's a shame about the toes on the blonde due as he looks great.  If I was certain it wasn't genetic I'd use him, but how can you ever be certain unless you saw them have an accident?

The bent toes has to be genetic, there are too many people with EOs with them not to be.  It was mentioned on one of the Spanish EO sites too. I think the genetics sets them up for it when the conditions are right (either during hatching or after).  I honestly have still never had an EO with it, I would say if I had.  I don't think we do anything differently, shavings for the first while, then let them loose to scratch.  We've had the same combinations of parents too :huh:

I love MV, she looks so intense like a sumatra, that expression!  I bet she will go broody for Debbie.  My sumatras go broody, but they do it secretly in unsafe places :nervous:  that's how I lost #4.  MV has little gold sprinkles in the white doesn't she!  What a pretty girl.  Is she long narrow and thin built or like a spray painted EO?

I think mine are laying and they are maybe a couple of weeks older .... :hatch: so look out :jumping:

Cockeral 3 is pretty nice, lots of rich brown, I haven't had one like him.  He is the tall narrow build like Blondies/Curlies.  They are pale legged.   I can't remember if I sent you Blondie eggs, but he could be from that side if I did.  I'd use him on your yellow legged girls.

Lovely birds, they look very content! :layer: :cozy:

Re: Oh island Girl... how about some pics?

Oh I love the picture Monika, thanks for posting them.  I love the "Peek-a-boo" picture, they are so curious.  Nice healthy looking group.  I have had my share of crooked toes in the two hatches I did this year, but never in that direction, mine all went inwards.  Must be genetic as I had other breeds in with the same hatch and they were all fine, just the EO's

Ohh hatching......can't hardly wait. :whistle::doI?:
