Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

I'm really interested to see what other folks think, and then what the chicks really turn out to be.
Plus like you all have said on some other posts, it's nice to have a photo record of them as they go through their different feather stages, even into their second molt.

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

Lol MD! Looks like we mostly agree. I based Blue 4 on the stern expression alone in the Portrait shot. Otherwise the feathering looks feminine- those boys though- they generally look stern. So we'll see! Great pics as always :)

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

I agree with Susan on all of them except Blue 4, I'm calling her a bossy girl.  She does have the stern look of a roo but with mine the chicks that had the black tips on the end of their feathers on the back of their heads and neck they were girls.

You, know, I think you guys are right- she has a very small comb and hen feathering. I'd like to see her standing on her own.

Cool, I didn't realize that  you had these tallied up. I'll have to see how I did comparatively speaking of course!

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

I knew I'd be learning from you folks! I'm lovin this...

Today was much colder than any of the previous days out, and by the end of our modeling session none of the chicks wanted to hold still. They kept running back to the box and huddling.

If I get some time I will try again, to fix some of the poor shots.

edited to fix spelling

Note - Chart does not match photo sequence - If you go back, be certain to match leg band color.
Chart denotes hatch sequence over a 3 day period, Which is very interesting indeed if Monika and I am right...

males hatched first?  That's interesting it is usually the opposite.

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

oooooh that is interesting now isn't it! Also, looks like maybe a 50/50 hen to roo ratio. Makes me think that I should be keeping better track of what I have in my latest hatches. Maybe its time for the bands and camera to come out again ;)

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

2 females. They seem  too solidly born for males and Gubi is right black at the tips seems to be female and the non mottled or barred looking ones sometimes can have grey or black mossiness on the tail and back feathers too.

I'm the one who needs to be thanking you folks for all the chicken tutoring! :applause:

Remember, the first six chicks in the chart are not in the same order as the first two rounds...

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

Just a little update...

Of the Round One chooks, these I kept - From right to left... Brown, Blue Two, Yellow, Black, and Orange(used to be Blue 4, I think...)

Yellow hasn't started laying yet, the other three are into their third dozen eggs at 24wks. Blue two has side sprigs coming in and a nasty temper, Brown (Cinnamon) is still a sweet heart. Black is a perfect gentleman and loving his role as the sole provider.  Haven't seen any fertility in the first dozen eggs, haven't cracked the next eighteen yet. :eat:

They are gorgeous Glen.  These threads are invaluable.  What a great record.   I told you Mr Black was going to be a nice colour and he is a beauty!

Terra-Blue I am do glad you are enjoying the site.  There is a fair bit of info here now on these lovely birds.

Re: WHAT'S MY GENDER?! Episode 4 (final round)

This is fantastic!  I'll have to try to keep track of the hatch order next time.... but no idea how you did that!
I love your birds and your fantastic record keeping.

My guess for these two is Female, Female.
