What's better than A Euskal Oiloa Hen?

A broody Euskal Oiloa hen!  :happycrowd"  Do you know how hard it is to have fertile EO eggs, a broody EO hen and NOT let her hatch some??  :doI?:

Yep that happened with Blondie, she was quite good natured about it really.  She's three and I don't think she knew why she wanted to do that for the first time!  One of these times it'll work out right.

Oh no! Tomorrow when you are collecting eggs could you rub the back of her neck at little for me and tell her how much I appreciate her efforts and that I promise to take care of all the little munchkins!

You bet Monika! I love patting them when they puff up. You're right Skeff, they seem to relatively friendly about th whole thing- just a little scolding and then they let you love them up!

Re: What's better than A Euskal Oiloa Hen?

We had one who was three years old the first time, didn't let her sit, she tried again briefly this fall, so I may let her in the spring.
Barney in Manitoba had 2 raise lots of chicks, one pullet when she was 6 months old and the other was 10-12 months when she started I think.

Re: What's better than A Euskal Oiloa Hen?

This pullet is one I hatched this spring from Sparkle and Sequin. She's my first EO to go broody. I hope she doesn't do it all the time though, she's one of my best marked hens lol!

Ahh let her hatch some....I know it is getting cold though :(.  My silkies hatched some in Feb, I had to take the babes into the house, was so afraid they would freeze if Mom got off them for too long.

Would you put her and the eggs in the garage Susan? It's a tough decision this time of year! :chook:

Re: What's better than A Euskal Oiloa Hen?

Thia is a tough one, cos you think well the mamma will keep them warmer than a heat lamp with less hassle to you.... but what if you end up having to look after them yourself?  So tempting though.  Partly why I didn't let Blondie sit was I needed her to keep laying so we had her line of eggs to hatch as she was the only female or I would have let her.

The mature, responsible part of my brain says "not right now". The impulsive part says, "go for it!". I hate to say which part usually wins...

Re: What's better than A Euskal Oiloa Hen?

Susan,

If you are looking for some mature, thoughtful support telling you that this is a bad time to hatch and you shouldn't do it, you've come to the wrong forum girl!!!!

We are all hopelessly addicted to pictures of new eo's, and there ain't nothin' cuter than a mamma with her chicks - could only be better with an eo mamma!

This gang will be much more helpful at offering excellent suggestions on how to do it successfully. Oh, by the way, where is Nora? Isn't she out your way? Maybe she would like some eo chicks??????? =D

When all else fails, go spend time with your chickens. :)

Pens are currently filled with Red Cuckoo (Marraduna) and Red Basque (Gorria) breeders, Spitz, and Seramas.

Re: What's better than A Euskal Oiloa Hen?

I would love to tell you not to do it but really Susan how would I back up this reasoning? I think if you thought of it more along the lines of experimenting for the good of science and for all the other EO enthusiasts it would be easier to accept the inevitability of the obvious .... DO IT!
