It has officially begun!

Set these last night! COuldn't resist the hatching bug a moment longer. These will all be for me, as I promised myself to hatch my own first this year. Those are 43 EO eggs and 8 BCM. Bring on the :hatch:!

Re: It has officially begun!

Good Luck with your hatch!

I will be keeping a watchful eye on your results, as we will be looking for eggs from you in a few months.  We now have the two pullets that are left that we hatched from yours last year back into laying.  :nervous: Our prize one is starting to lay a firm shell egg now!  :jumping:  Hope she keeps it up as I would like to try those two with the roo that we got from you.

Good Luck and keep us posted.:chickout:

RB,

Are your eggs ok? Didn't lose power in the storm? :nervous:

I am petrified of hatching eggs. I think I'll wait until I have some Oiloak of my own first.

Re: It has officially begun!

No power failures here yet, the eggs get candled tomorrow and I will be putting in another hatch of 30+ EO's, a dozen Mottled Houdans and a couple of BCM eggs. I'll post tomorrow to update on fertility with the first set.

Re: It has officially begun!

Did you get much snow last night? We have at least 4 inches and it is snowing again?  Our chickens will never come out now.  Perfect :snowman: making weather and the trees are so pretty. But Liverpool area got the rain instead of the snow.  More coming in Sunday or Monday, "SNOW DAY!"

Hope you have good results! :hatch:

Re: It has officially begun!

Ok results so far at week 1:

EO's: I removed 8 of the 43 eggs, leaving 35 in the tray. Some of these are frankly questionable but I left them in another week to be certain.
BCM's: Removed 1 out of 8 eggs leaving 7 in the tray. These are difficult to candle because of the shell color.

I always err on the side of optimism when setting eggs, so I set several both times that were frankly quite chilled. I'm not surprised that they didn't develop. They had that spotted look about them that tells you there is bacteria inside the egg. I'm certain my rate will improve with warmer weather, but I always chuck them in just in case.

Tonight I set another 50 eggs. This time I placed 35 EO's. 12 mottled Houdans, and 3 BCM's. My orpingtons are really just beginning to lay and my barred rocks are coming off a very heavy moult. I think I'll wait until February/March to set any of those. I'll continue to collect this week for one more EO/Houdan/BCM hatch since I'm not working and can do multiple collections per day, then I must wait until it warms up a bit before setting more. This will give my own birds (These hatches are for me.) a good couple of months head start. I'm hoping for POL pullets by summer.

Not bad considering the weather conditions. I'll update next Friday!

Re: It has officially begun!

That's pretty good RB considering the time of year :jumping:.  I know it's a challenge to collect the eggs before they get chilled but if you are off, power to you

Look forward to an update in a week

Re: It has officially begun!

Sorry for the late update but we had "Snowmageddon" followed by a powerful dump of rain and now we're recovering. Back to school as well, but I locked down my hatch today. 34 EO eggs and 6 Black Coppers in this batch, followed in the next two weeks by 100 more of various stripes. Then I shall start collecting eggs this week as well because the weather will get warmer and I'll have that empty tray in the 1202....

I need to meet a bunch of chick orders and pay for my new fencing for the barnyard. Go girls go! :EO:

Re: It has officially begun!

OK the first hatch is in the brooder. I got 21 EO's out of 34 eggs that made it to lockdown. 3 pipped and died, 10 never pipped. I don't candle after 14 days so those were likely early quitters. I can't ever tell after 14 days what's going on in there at any rate so I just pop them in the hatcher. As usual the EO's came first, at 20 days. Of the 6 Black Copper Marans that made it to lockdown all 6 hatched. One came out yellow...which means momma has some explaining to do!

Here is a picture of the bunch:

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj587/riverbendfarmss/eos2014_zps140d4e5d.jpg

Next hatch due Friday is 35 EOs, 2 Black Coppers, and 5 Mottled Houdans. Wish me luck on the Houdans, I have more orders than I can fill and the girls are slackin! :banginghead:
