Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

Hello and :welcome: To the EOCF! The Zilarra is the white variety of EO. I believe it carries the silver gene, and no barring gene, which would preclude it from popping out of Marraduna or Gorria flocks. but we have seen some interesting things, including recessive white.

You'll need your photos hosted at another site like photobucket or google or something like that, then you paste the location between the image brackets provided by the img button above the smiley box.

I will see if I can help her.  Her boys are the Maraduna/Zillera mix that we've seen photos of before.

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

Tt10 often a few almost white roosters with the black in the hackles and tail are popping up in the EO chicks. It's very rare however to get the white females. I would have said we never get white females but this year I had a few that we're almost white with only a bit of gold from a couple of my pairs. I'm not sure though that they were silver based like the Zilarra are supposed to be. So it may be possible to get Zilarra out of our current EO gene pool but it would take a lot of time and a cross to something else may be needed.

Also you can't get Zilarra from recessive white birds. The white just covers everything up including the black that you're supposed to see in the hackles and tail.

As far as I know there is no one breeding for Zilarra in Canada or the US. Now that doesn't mean no one is just that I don't know who...

That said if the Zilarra is a project you'd like to take on we can help you with information as much as possible.

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

We are trying to breed for Zliarra, but currently have limited resources to do so. We'd like any genetic info we can get on how to produce them and whether its possible from our Marraduna/Blondie EOs.

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

You would want to pick a breed that is white columbian in color. Preferably one with red ear lobes as its tough to get rid of the white in the earlobes. Obviously the colored in type to EOs the better but I'm not sure which breed to suggest.

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

I think some where trying to breed them with a Colombian Rock ???  You want a Colombian breed with similar body type and red ear lobes.  Another breed might be Light Sussex, but can't remember their ear lobe colour.
Try sending Worthitfarms a PM as I know she has been trying to work on the Zillaria as well.  Or maybe others can help you out with better with this, I am struggling to get the Marraduna colour right ;)

I thought we decided EOs are not a land race?

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

I was told they were not a land race.  They look like a land race in Canada because a number of colours have been mixed together.  EO Maradunas in Spain are all the same in colour and shape.  Land race chickens all look very different.

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

We should get Maggiesdad to weight in here but I believe M&K is correct, EO are a recognized breed with 5 varieties  in Spain not a landrace. Their origin prior to the 1970's however was more that of a landrace.

In North America we are working on having them accepted as a new breed into the American Poultry Association.

Re: looking for anyone breeding Zilarra EOs

They are a breed, and they are considered Atlantic Class over there, not Mediterranean. No white ears.
The APA doesn't recognize an Atlantic Class.

Yet.
