Hatching on Easter Sunday

We too are in lockdown.  The home made incubator worked so well last time that we now have 48 eggs which should hatch Easter Sunday.  2 doz EO eggs from Susan plus 7 little bantam eggs that she donated to my son - he is so excited about these.  We also have a mix of our own EO eggs, EOxCochin and EO x Lohmann.  The 6 we hatched in our first try with the incubator are now 2 months old and blooming.  We think we have 4 hens and 2 roos. We also homed 4 little 2 day old chicks yesterday that were rescued from a trailer that had been delivered to my husbands place of work for servicing.  The men could hear pips and found 9 little chicks hiding out.  Unfortunately 5 passed away before I got there to rescue them, the remaining 4 soon perked up when they went under the heat lamp.  Not sure what make and model they are (presumably meat birds) but they are so cute how could we resist.

Re: Hatching on Easter Sunday

We candled a few of the eggs yesterday and the bantams are looking good.  Didnt want to open the door for too long because the humidity goes down quite quickly.  One more week,  so eggcited.  We have never tried to hatch this many eggs before.    DH is still trying to think where to put them, not outside as we have 6 foot snow drifts around our yard and temps are still -20+.  Our older guys and gals just pop their heads out of the door to say hi then go back to the heat of the lamps.

Re: Hatching on Easter Sunday

We wont colour them, promise.  I prefer them to look the way nature intended.  Looks like Monikka is sending us another doz eggs so we will do another lockdown once these guys have hatched.  Gonna have to talk to the neighbours to find some temporary accomodation for them at this rate.

And here are the stowaways.  Huge feet on them already.  We have been told that these chickens usually end up at KFC so obviously a meat bird (Cob maybe).

Re: Hatching on Easter Sunday

The cool thing about some meat breeds is that if you feed them normally, and keep them on, they make a good fat hen. I know a guy who kept meat kings and bred them, the cross isn't stable but he said that after a few months they began to look more normal and less "Frankenchicken". I bet the'd still throw fat babies.

Re: Hatching on Easter Sunday

Thanks Riverbend, we had thought to just feed them up and then plate them at the end of 3 months but I like your advice as I have trouble eating my own flock.  We were given some of these chicks when we first started keeping chickens and they ate us out of house and home but by 3 months old they weighed approx 10 lb.  Perhaps I will just cut back on their food intake and make them part of the flock - unless they all turn out to be roos of course.
