New Hatch Set on January 25

Great News! Just candled my eggs in the Hovabator and out of 35 that I set last Friday, only 3 were clear! That's a 91% fertility rate! My roosters are doing the deed. So at first week's count I have 18 Barred Rock, 7 Euskal Oiloa, and 7 Black Penedesenca. Go chickies go!

Re: New Hatch Set on January 25

All 32 Eggs have now gone to lock down. I'm certain that they are not all still developing, but I have a hard time telling, so I usually just candle them at week 1. Have 7 EO's and I think 8 Black Penny's, the rest are Barred Rocks. May the rockin' and rollin' begin!

Re: New Hatch Set on January 25

UPDATE: 7 have pipped and its only the evening of day 19. I'm certain my incubator wasn't too hot...although I did set them in the evening...perhaps its day 20. Ahh well, they're coming!

Re: New Hatch Set on January 25

Okay, the dust has settled and the babies are OUT! I had a rotten hatch  this time. Lots of shrink wrapping even tho the humidity was correct and lots of non-pippers. Some pipped and couldn't hatch. Some I helped :chairhide:, though no EO's needed help this time. I hatched 8 Barred Rocks, 3 Black Pennys and 3 EO's.

Then I managed to contact a guy who raises EO's only 3 hours from me and he had a hatch this week as well! :jumping::jumping: He got 27 out of 36 to hatch and was complaining about his hatch rate :banginghead::banginghead::banginghead:. So I drove the 3 hours and bought 15 of them from him. I'd have taken them all but he had promised them to another lady. I sold 5 to the guy who is going to help me on my EO project. They are from the same parents as my original stock, so no genetic diversity, although it does give me more birds, and technically a generation off so there is some mixing of genes there.

While I was there he had 3 others that were 2 months old and I snagged those as well (I'm shameless). One was a beautiful pullet of almost perfect color, and the others were two cockerels. One has a crooked toe and proper coloration, and the other is all white with black flecking. I think we shall save him for a Zilarra project with some of my lightest deer colored, columbian-marked pullets and see what we get . I am collecting now for my next hatch which will be all Black Pennys and EO's. I'm hoping to set it by Friday.

Here are the photos of the babies. I'll post the 2 month old photos in another section.

Here are all 13 on the new EO babies:

Here they are again, somewhat more spread out. I think I see at least 4 pullets.

Here are the Barred Rocks in their basket:

Here are the Black Pennys, only 3 alas!

Here is a shot of the tell-tale black shanks that allows me to spot the BP chicks on hatching:

Re: New Hatch Set on January 25

:congrats: I found winter hatching and humidity issues were definitely related last year. Glad that you found some other EOs to add to the ones you hatched. Very cute indeed!
