Rumpless Araucana Chicks

Had to share some of the pictures of my recent hatch of Rumpless Araucana chicks.  This should give me a good start for this breed.  I had three hens 10 years ago and never had a rooster so after they died I found it extremely hard to find anyone in Canada that had any.  I found one lady in Windsor, ON that I purchased chicks from this past spring, so this now gives me birds from two unrelated sources.

Re: Rumpless Araucana Chicks

Ahh spring   I wish it was then I wouldn't have to keep them in the basement.   They are super cute I must admit.  They are fine at this age but after a couple of weeks and they start to grow and jump around then the dust and smell begins........  Just mean cleaning them out.....a lot!  LOL

Right now we are having a rash of paralysis-2 Araucana who are still alive til they see the vet tomorrow, at least... and Two were 1/2 Araucana newborn chicks were spontaneously paralyzed and died.  All found in 1 week's time.

After this is done, solved, and over... I may bug you for your contact addy for your egg daddy!  ;)

GORGEOUS babies!  you should be very proud!

Re: Rumpless Araucana Chicks

Congrats! Seeing new babies never gets old. Do any of these have the ear tuffs? I was trying to see some but I don't.

Re: Rumpless Araucana Chicks

NP, no unfortunately none have any ear tufts :( .  The tufts are REAL hard to come by and the one that I hatched on Dec. 11 only has them on one side but it is a double tuft.  I know they will carry the gene so hopefully it may get passed to any offspring.

Jenn, thanks I am EXTREMELY excited as well :excited:.  I can't believe that 11 hatched as they took 13 days to get to me and being that they were shipped always lowers the fertility,  I am just so thankful that Greg was so generous with the extras that he sent or I may not have had so many hatch.

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with your birds .  I hope it is not Mareks Disease :nervous: it kind of sounds like the symptoms.

Re: Rumpless Araucana Chicks

Paula you will have to explain to me what double tufted means?  I assumed it meant one on each side?  I had a couple of rumpless EE's once but I put them in the same category as the naked necks.  Sorry, I prefer fully tailed.  Chicks are always nice to see especially at this time of the year.  Thanks for posting them.

Re: Rumpless Araucana Chicks

Gubi I'm pretty sure she means two tufts on one side rather that tufted on both sides

Some of us are driven by the need to make animals a part of our lives. We are soothed by their presence, fascinated by their behavior, and amused by their antics.

Right LL.  They can either be single tufted or double tufted, this one is double tufted but only on one side of it's head.  Seems it also has part of a tail as well which can happen as my tufted hen has a tail.
I just have always like the look of these birds not everyone does.  I have just been trying to find some for quite awhile since my hens died 10 years ago.
