Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

ok a few more photos of my girls.
Annie, the broody mom this past fall. She started laying again 2 weeks ago.

Dottie, my millie from MDs eggs. She is the friendliest girl I have and greedy. She never seems to get enough sunflower seeds.

Goose, i like her coloring and shape. what do you guys think? no eggs yet from Dottie or Goose.

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Fantastic photos! I think all three are very, very pretty. I love photos of healthy, happy hens.

If you want more objective and useful feedback I can reread the S.O.P. and compare each to it? I love the intense yellow of Dottie and Goose's legs and beaks.  I think the colour of Annie's feather is closest to ideal? The body shape is hardest for me to tell in photos.  I don't know what the tail pitch is supose to be for E.O. hens.

Let me go back to how beautiful they each are!

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

You take beautiful photos! And so do the girls!
They all look wonderful. (Just thinking out loud here)  I think Dottie's tone is closest to standard - the Marraduna is a barred red, so take a Gorria hen and add barring, and there you have it. While the buff and lemon tones are beautiful in their own right, I don't think that is what we are looking for.  IIRC, girls should run a 35 deg tail, to  my inexperienced eye, Dottie and Goose have it nailed. From her comb and wattles, I think Goose will be laying within the week - if not, she will be playing in the nest boxes and singing about it! Dottie is still a coupla weeks out yet... Does Annie have side sprigs? I can't remember and can't tell from the pic. I'd breed her anyway, because broodiness is important to me...  Where is Goose from? She sure looks like Cinnamon did as a pullet...  As for the legs on Dottie and Goose, I think that's what two coats of yellow and a great winter ration will do for you. Take note of that and compare after a coupla moths of lay... Also, once the late girl has laid her first dozen eggs, measure all three for capacity and compare to what you are actually getting, egg size and frequency. Check Dottie's wings for solid white feathers. Four more weeks and egg production should get a kick in the rear.

Oh - I reserve the right to change my mind at any time ;)

Cheers! :wine: There was an egg in Ol' Yeller's pen today! I'm going to slip it and about 50 others I've collected over the past week into the Sportsman tomorrow! Wooot!  Come on chickies!  :chickout:

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Thanks K&M
I'm not so worried about the SOP but would like to get others 'gut' feeling about them. of course SOP comments are welcome.

Thanks for thinking they are pretty girls too. Some times i think I talk and think about chickens too much.. but i can't help it.

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

MD, thanks for the comments. Goose and Dottie are from your eggs that CR hatched. I also have another less millie girl from those eggs. she was camera shy today. Annie has a nice yellow legged girl running around here from her September hatch. I'll have to get a photo of her.

Meanwhile, here are some weights on Annie's chicks at 16 weeks old.
Anna - pure EO - 2lb 9oz tiny girl (should say this is Annie's girl from Yellow as the sire)
EO/O pullet - 3lb 12oz very big girl
cockerel 1 - 4lb 7oz
cockerel 2 - 4lb 2oz

Dottie - 4lb 4oz - 30 weeks old
Welsummer pullet 4lb 2oz - 11 months old
Orpington pullet 7lb 4oz - 11 months old

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Those chicks of CR's were only 3 weeks behind the pullets I kept... I need to go back and see when they hatched... I would have liked them to come into lay about 5 weeks sooner. We could have used the eggs while the older girls were molting. My EO JG cross girls came into lay much sooner than the EOs. hmmm -  hybrid vigor?

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Yes, I'm thinking the EO/Orpington mixes might make good meat birds. For a pullet to be almost as heavy as the cockerels from her hatch and a full grown Welsummer. Geez that's a big girl. Wonder what size a cockerel would be with that mix.

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Welsummer/EO mixed pullet laid her first egg yesterday. Exactly 21 weeks old. The pure EO pullet is interested in the nesting area today.

In case someone is wondering, the W/EO egg was a medium pink/brown color, no spots.

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Has, I love getting a new pullet's egg. She laid another today. Little bigger and a little darker. I'm already thinking about the 75% EOs/25% Welsummer chicks. Maybe even some German New Hampshire chicks from CRs eggs. Oh yes and then there are the Bresse chickens... I might be close to having my DH dis-own me. :chairhide:

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Haha, I love that you remember tee hee hee! I here that often from my DH.

I wonder how many chickens are too many???

I keep thinking of the different chicks I can hatch and can't see why I shouldn't... Then. My DH said, " how much do you want to spend on chicken feed?" I guess I want to spend a lot.

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Yes that's the thing. Feed is getting so expensive and with the cold weather mine are eating me out of house and home.

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Ditto on the feed bill

I can't wait for summer because they are such wicked foragers. They were out in the snow today dearly wishing for bugs. They scratched and scratched at the gravel in the melted spots. Silly chooks...

Re: EOs and mixes (lots of photos)

Some updated photos of my EO/O(rpington)
she is a big girl and grew fast. I'm liking what i'm seeing in her. She as a little bit of gold in her hackles. I think this mix might make a nice  dual purpose bird. She grew big fast and I can only imagine how big the boys would be.
