Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Beautiful birds Naturespace.  I have some roolets hatched in early July (EOxWA? and a definite EOxPC) and they still hang out with their chantecler Mom when she is laying her eggs in the nest and when foraging, the one is very close to the same size as the Mom.  My Sumatra has a baby Wheaten Ameraucana she has raised a week younger than them that is still hanging on her Mommas apron too.  mMaybe they keep the singletons and smaller hatches longer.  We have them usually give up around 8 weeks or so on average, but those roos must be 14 maybe 16 weeks now.

What I think is WAmerxEO looks like your wellie cross roo in colour, the second from the right in the last pic.  Those are beautiful babies.

Those babies are growing so fast and I love the colours.  Like I say the mixes are usually the prettiest birds

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Love it. Some of the babies have been sleeping in different nesting boxes, but seem to be ok. She is still calling them to her at times in the day.

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

update on chicks.
There are now 6 babies. One got picked off by a vulture, at least that's my best guess what happened to him. It was the EO cockerel.

Mailman's baby.

All the babies are half EO except one. The second one on the left is pure EO girl. Rest are welsummer mixes. Black is an Orpington mix.

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

:banginghead:
Saw one of the pullets get picked off by a hawk today. It happened so fast I couldn't react. It was probably dead when I saw it being hauled away. Little yellow legs dangling down. Stupid hawk! I didn't mind so much when it was the cockerel. Wish there was an easy way to keep those youngsters in the electric fence. They just pop right through.

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Aw, Heidi!  :stomp:  That's tough!

Not much consolation, but at least you do know what happened to her (instead of wondering), The hawk won't waste it (compared to dogs on a spree), and your flock gets a little sharper each time the hawk comes by...

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Get a shotgun.....here if an animal is harming domestic livestock...they are fair game.  I usually don't have Hawk problems, but I do have a gun in the barn just in-case......................

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

By "fair game" he means use the shotgun's loud noise to scare the hawk away. ;)
