Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Cool pics!     Love that one eye watching the babies and one eye watching you! She's a good mama.

Not so fast, lighter chick just might be a girl... that's a lot of red dusting on the down between her wings - and a big didie on the bottom.
Don't quote me, tho!

  1) did you collect from a light pullet? and 2) the daddy is your Mr Yellow roo, right? ( that's the only drawback to my theory, he's got a rich red to go with the barring...)

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Annie is the mom and Yellow is the papa. A few more weeks we will know more.
The mixes are the hard ones to guess. I think I might only have one Wellie/EO that is female.  2 are W/EO and 2 are EO/W i think with that mix Annie's girls will be barred, but the Wellie mom's; none of them will be barred but the males will carry the barring gene.

:funny: HAHA i almost sound like i know what i'm talking about. I'm sure i have it totally wrong.

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

At that point I had the eggs separated by pullet and I don't refrigerate them, so I took 4 of her eggs and 2 different Wellies and one Orpington. She laid one the day I let her have real eggs. One got stepped on so 7 babies. I used eggs that I thought might have been pure wellie. It was only a week after we got rid of our wellie roo.

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Update: 3.5 week olds
So I think I identified the parents of each chick. they really changed over the past week. I was away for 5 days and it was nice to come home and see the changes.

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

I am extra sure of the EO/W chicks. Their combs seemed to have gotten pink over night and bigger.

:jumping:    PRETTY BABIES...Your EO/W chicks almost look like Rhodebar Babies...dark like the little pullets anyway......

I so want those little balloons to follow my chicks around! That would make keeping track of who's who so much easier. ;)

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

How did I miss this thread?? Such pretty chicks! Nice crosses too. You can really see the EO in them. They're getting so big. I love watching them feather out and have their crazy growth spurts. You're so lucky to have a good broody EO. I hope I have one in my little flock. :please:

Re: New chicks... to the world!!!

Question:  at what age do broodies stop mothering? On BYC I heard 4-5 weeks. She is giving them more rein but not letting them go completely. I found them all in the nesting box tonight at bed time. 7 chicks and mom. I'm not in a hurry just wondering.

The other nest box had 2 EO pullets and 2 Silver Amerucanas. Must be cosy.
